Helena Roscoe/Frances Woodard Nursing Award

The Zonta Club of Albany presents an annual award to a second-year nursing student in memory of two outstanding members of our Club: Helena Roscoe and Frances Woodward.

Helena Roscoe, a 25-year member of the Zonta Club of Albany, served as President in 1976-77. She had a varied career working for Cornell University, Washington University, General Electric and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany. In her last position, Residence Director of Albany Medical Center School of Nursing, Helena became aware of the need for financial assistance for nursing students in the Albany area. Frances Woodward was a 40-year member of the Zonta Club of Albany, and President in 1962-63. Fran was an active member of her community, both in her working career and in volunteer service. She served as the Tax Collector of the Central School District#1, Town of East Greenbush, New York.

Frances actively supported Zonta, attending District workshops and conferences and devoting herself to the Albany Club’s community service projects. Fran is remembered for her kind manner and love of Zonta.

Students from area nursing schools including Hudson Valley Community College, Samaritan Hospital, Sage College, Maria College and Memorial School of Nursing are invited to submit an application by March 1.

Zelda M. Uthe Legal Project Award

The Zonta Club of Albany supports the work of the Legal Project by presenting an award to help support an intern. The Legal Project is a private, not-for-profit organization that was founded by the Capital District Women’s Bar Association in 1995. It provides a variety of free and low cost legal services to the working poor, victims of domestic violence and other underserved individuals in the Capital District of New York State.

Zelda M. Uthe, born on July 15, 1918, was actively involved in the State Association of Towns, which she joined as secretary when she was 17 years old. After graduating third in her class at Albany Law School, she joined her father’s law practice in Coeymans. She served as Director of the Association of Towns of the State of New York for more than 40 years. Zelda was a member of the University Club of Albany, the Coeymans-Ravena Women’s Club and served as a Sunday school teacher. She joined the Zonta Club of Albany in 1961 and served as President in 1964-65. She was a Club delegate to numerous Zonta district conferences and to a Zonta International Convention. Her strong commitment to Zonta’s mission to improve the status of women was demonstrated by her continuing gift to the Zonta Club of Albany under her will.

The Amelia Earhart Award

Each year, The Zonta Club of Albany solicits applications from women enrolled in 2nd year or more of Ph.D./doctoral aerospace-related sciences or engineering programs, who have superior academic achievement. The club selects one, and sends it on to Zonta International. (Winning Application due to Zonta International by Nov 15.) Zonta International Amelia Earhart awards of $10,000 each are made to 35 International winners, annually.

Jean M. Coon Award

Club solicits applications from High School Juniors or seniors who perform community service. (Academic achievement is not relevant.) Club winner is forwarded to the District where she becomes eligible to win another $500 district award.

Jane M Klausman Women in Business Scholarship

Club solicits applications from women who are 2nd Year College Students through last year Masters Students, who demonstrate an outstanding potential in business. The application comes out January 1st of each year, and is due to the club in May. The winning application is forwarded to district (Due July 1st.) The district reviews all applications submitted by their 20 clubs and selects one winner who receives $1000. The application of that one winner is then forwarded to Zonta International and is automatically in competition for one of (12) $7K International awards.

Young Woman in Public Affairs

August 1st each year, Zonta International releases the Young Women In Public Affairs application for the following year. The Zonta Club of Albany solicits applications from females, age 16-19, committed to volunteerism, experienced in leadership, and have knowledge & support of ZI mission, ideals, and programs. The club winner is forwarded to District by April 1st, where the applicant might win a $1000 district award. (The winner is announced in May.) From there, the district forwards the winning application to Zonta International by May 1st, where the applicant might win one of (10) $4000 awards. (Winners announced July 1st.)
