Zonta Club of Montreal History

Zonta International (originally called “Zonta Confederation”) was founded in Buffalo, NY, USA in 1919. The First Zonta Convention was held in Syracuse, NY, in 1921. National headquarters in Chicago, Illinois opened in 1928 and became International with the addition of Canadian clubs in 1929 and the first European club (Vienna, Austria) in 1930.

The Zonta Club of Montreal chartered in 1929 and is one of the oldest clubs in the world, outside of the United States. For all these years, members have worked tirelessly to improve the status of women and to help them achieve their rightful place in the Montreal Society and worldwide.

In the early years the club helped the physically challenged women and sick children with hands on projects. In the latter years the club encourages mature women to improve their status; sensitizes young women to the needs of public life by assuming leadership roles in their community; and assists local shelters for women.

The Zonta Club of Montreal is a proud member of the Montreal Council of Women.
